Mars Mettle – How Tough Is Your Mars?
Okay so let’s get this real clear. None of what i say here is a personal attack on YOUR Mars or that of any homie you know. This is all for research and discussion purposes.
With that in mind, sometimes it helps to glance at someone’s chart and get a quick take on their Mars Vibe. It can be a good indicator of their strength or even their tolerance for treachery.
Ignore the aspect and whether or not you think the sign is positive or not. Just go for closeness + the planets involved. Fight Champ Amanda Nunes, above, is a Mars=Saturn-Pluto person.
Mars Saturn is like the gold standard for strategy, leadership and the ability to structure something. You see it in C.E.O.s and successful types all the damn time. It is the hot-head “Operator As Fuq” Mars vibe blended with the sagacious control and pragmatic dignity of Saturn. Sure, Mars square Saturn may have a harder time getting it together than Mars conjunct Saturn but it is still Mars-Saturn Vibe. Add Pluto for a Mars that won’t stop and which gets off on regenerating, every single damn day.
As for the old idea of signs being exalted or in their ‘fall’ etc? I am over it. YES it is totally useful for Horary – more on that later – and if you have a planet exalted, gloat a little bit. But an example? The other day on the blog, i did a post on a fallen American special forces solider, a Cherokee, and his Mars was zero Cancer. Technically and according to many textbooks, this should be a ‘weak’ Mars. Without going into the merits of any particular overseas mission/geopolitics, failure of courage was clearly not this persons main issue.
A brilliant example of Mars-Saturn awesome is Elizabeth Holmes, the world’s youngest female self-made billionaire & medical entrepreneur.
As a child she read Marcus Aurelius (Mars sextile Saturn). For a study on Mars-Saturn in Scorpio (Sun Sign Aquarius) you can not do better than this article. The life hacking, the super minimalist wardrobe to allow her creative energy for achievement, the clarity and drive.
When you see Mars in aspect to Saturn, all these things are an attribute of the person. The relentless drive of Mars yoked in – one way or another – with the wisdom of Saturn. They think LONG term ahead. *UPDATE: Elizabeth Holmes has since been drastically discredited and challenged. I am leaving this example in here as an FYI.
Another Mars-Saturn woman: Cheryl Strayed, the author of Wild.
Being Mars-Saturn does not mean you are a pod person who never fuqs up or makes a poor decision. It means that at some point, when you go into mission mode, you’re guided.
Steven Covey, author of the cult-in-its day The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People – was Mars trine Uranus. “Live out of your imagination, not your history.” he wrote. He was born in 1932. That was revolutionary then.
Rudolf Steiner (yes, as in the schools) was Mars-Pluto as is Nunes above, Deepak Chopra. William Blake – Mars-Neptune. Mars Pluto is ruthless and driven to transform society/culture. Mars-Neptune can, okay, stop at nothing in their bid to get out of it/transcend this boring realm but tend also toward stunning art/music/cinema.
Mars is a drive that needs expression. YES, it can be negative. James Holmes, the infamous “Batman” movie killer in Colorado is Mars-Pluto conjunct…in Scorpio. But the perma-cool Bruce Lee was also Mars conjunct Pluto. We still have individual choice with how we use or express these energies.
LOOK at the whole Mars Vibe. Mars Neptune wants to be artistic, glamorous and at one with other realms. This can be William Blake or it can be something a little bit more dark.
Mars Jupiter can often be the over the top exuberant and enterprising type but who may lack that magic Saturn staying power or the super extra inventive/transformative/visionary power of a Mars with Uranus/Pluto/Neptune. So without being bogged down in the style of aspect or the signs, just look at WHAT Mars is hooked up with – five degree MAX orb.
That is the drive. And brilliantly, sometimes you can have a little baby Mars doing nothing much in particular and then BAM – along comes – say – Pluto and it hangs out in aspect to that Mars for a long, long time. That changes the vibe big-time. So people – including you – are not just their natal.
Mars can also go direct or forward by progression and this often results in a big shift in the persons life. Mars Direct by progression can be like WOW I WOKE UP. Like in those movies where sleeper agents or aliens suddenly get pinged by central command/the mothership.
So if you really want to judge a Mars, make a list of all the connections. Notice what’s activating it. Or draining it. A strong Mrs is resilient. A weak Mars can SEEM strong but is in fact just rigid. In the same way that locked out knees don’t actually work to strengthen your stance.
Once you’ve got a grip on who/what Mars is in alliance with then and only then is it worth trying to rate the aspects or signs. So Mars in Aries, Capricorn or Scorpio is technically strong. So is Mars in the 1st, 10th or 8th house. So is Mars on an angle. Mars augmented (conjunct, trine or sextile) has an easier time accessing the energy of the other forces than when he is square or opposite them.
BUT say you’ve got Mars square Moon and you find your assertive drive does not really align with your emotional flow. Once a month the Moon is conjunct your Mars – if you have Mars in Gemini, the Moon in Gemini is conjunct or near your Mars once a month – and you find circumstances and messages/omens conspire to illustrate how you can blend these two together more productively.
So, what do you think?
